Joe Strummer

The ongoing 30th anniversary salute to the Clash etches a new peak with the long-awaited DVD release of JOE STRUMMER: THE FUTURE IS UNWRITTEN, a film by Julien Temple, which will arrive in stores July 8th on Legacy Recordings, a division of SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.

The intimate biographical portrait of Clash frontman, vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and primal lyricist Joe Strummer (b. Aug. 21, 1952 – d. Dec. 22, 2002) underscores his passion for the music, and his instincts as a committed social and political activist. His body of work, alongside his partners in the Clash, led the band to be inscribed in rock history as “the only band that mattered” then – and the only band that really matters now.

Filmmaker Temple’s 30-year association with John Graham Mellor aka Joe Strummer resounds throughout the course of the film, as the Clash City Rocker’s life and times and influences unfold. THE FUTURE IS UNWRITTEN – with narration throughout by Strummer from his BBC radio show – is a major musical event in its own right, featuring some 65 songs heard in full or in part. (Please see soundtrack CD description below.)

The film is also a gathering of dozens of friends, family members, band mates, and luminaries whose lives were affected by Strummer, among them (in order of appearance): Mick Jones, Steve Jones, Bono, Topper Headon, Pearl Harbour, Don Letts, Joe Ely, John Cusack, Johnny Depp, Flea, Matt Dillon, Martin Scorsese, Steve Buscemi, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Courtney Love, Anthony Kiedis, Jim Jarmusch, Lucinda Mellor (Joe’s widow), and many others. Most of the interviews take place at the various bonfire sites whose development as meeting grounds is explored in the film.

The DVD version of the original two-hour THE FUTURE IS UNWRITTEN, which is presented in 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound audio, is now augmented with an additional 100 minutes of bonfire interviews not seen in the film’s original theatrical version. Entitled “Conversations With Joe,” the bonus interviews include many of the aforementioned personalities. In addition to Strummer’s narration, there is also a feature-length audio commentary by Temple that runs the duration of the film. The program is completed with the original theatrical trailer.

THE FUTURE IS UNWRITTEN is the culmination of a mission that began 30 years ago for award-winning director Temple, who began to film the Clash 30 years ago at the dawn of the punk rock movement in England. Temple set the project aside to work on the Sex Pistols, resulting in The Great Rock ’n’ Roll Swindle (1980), one of the definitive accounts of the era. In the late-’90s, after a two decade hiatus, Temple’s friendship with Strummer was renewed at the Glastonbury festival and the seeds of this film were sown.

THE FUTURE IS UNWRITTEN had its premiere at the Sundance Festival in January 2007. That was followed by screenings at the Dublin Film Festival in February; and in London the following May, where it went on to win a British Independent Film Award for Best Documentary. Acclaim across the U.S. was unanimous, with many critics listing it among their Top 10 films of the year.

In May 2007, the soundtrack album, The Future Is Unwritten: Music From The Julien Temple Film, was issued on Legacy Recordings, comprising five spoken word interview tracks, and 20 music selections (a fraction of the titles heard in full or in part in the film). In addition to 1979’s “Armagideon Time” single, three out of the album’s four previously unreleased tracks feature the Clash. All three of the other great bands in Strummer’s life are also represented: the pre-Clash 101’ers, the post-Clash Latino Rockabilly War, and his final band the Mescaleros.

Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan are among a dozen artists included on the soundtrack who impacted Strummer (or were influenced by him), among them Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochran, Tim Hardin, the MC5, Nina Simone, and the multi-ethnic array of Algerian worldbeat singer-composer DJ Rachid Taha, Latin composer Andres Landero, Jamaican ska guitarist Ernest Ranglin, and Jamaican reggae dub king and DJ U-Roy.

Following the Sundance premiere, Entertainment Weekly’s Owen Gleiberman wrote that the film “passionately evokes the spiky fervor of the late Clash frontman.” As Jeremy Mathews wrote in Film Threat, “Temple succeeds in creating a portrait neither glowing nor damning, but representative of a remarkable man.”

Sura Wood raved in Hollywood Reporter, “You don’t have be a fan of the 1970s British punk rock sensation the Clash to enjoy Julien Temple’s The Future Is Unwritten, a visually exciting, high-octane, rock history of the band and its charismatic frontman and songwriter, Joe Strummer. Simply said: It’s terrific.” Robert Koehler summed up in Variety, “Strummer’s strange career … provides Temple with unusually dramatic and complex elements to explore a brilliant, if mercurial, creative musical life. Pic is the creative equal to Strummer’s aggressive signature, ensuring Strummer will be in demand among both longtime Clash fans and pop culture mavens for theatrical and beyond.”

Strummer’s dedication to music lives on at Strummerville, the Joe Strummer Foundation For New Music, a registered charity that aims to create new opportunities for aspiring musicians. Established by friends and family in the year after his death, the foundation seeks to reflect Strummer’s unique contribution to the music world by offering support, resources and performance opportunities to artists who would not normally have access to them.
The Clash: Live At Shea On CD October 6th

As rain fell on a near-capacity audience at New York City’s Shea Stadium, Clash road manager Kosmo Vinyl took the mic and whipped the crowd to crescendo as the band took the stage. With frontman Joe Strummer announcing “Welcome to the Casbah Club,” the Clash launched into the powerful opening guitar refrain of “London Calling” and made history.

Recorded while on the road supporting their fifth album, 1982’s Combat Rock, THE CLASH LIVE AT SHEA STADIUM captures the British rock commando unit at the peak of its powers. Bristling with energy and attitude, LIVE AT SHEA STADIUM is set to take its place alongside James Brown at the Apollo, The Who at Leeds and Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison as one of the greatest live recordings of all time.

The Clash, opening for The Who on their farewell tour of the US, played two nights at the legendary Shea Stadium (October 12th & 13th, 1982). Recorded by Glyn Johns, the album features the second night’s performance in its entirety. Despite being the support act, The New York Post reported “there were as many Clash fans on those nights as Who fans.” One of the few remaining unreleased Clash treasures, the recordings have long been sought after by fans. The tapes were unearthed by the late Joe Strummer while packing for a move.

'Live at Shea Stadium' track listing:
Kosmo Vinyl Introduction
London Calling
Police On My Back
Guns Of Brixton
Tommy Gun
The Magnificent Seven
Armagideon Time
The Magnificent Seven (return)
Rock The Casbah
Train In vain
Career Opportunities
Spanish Bombs
Clampdown
English Civil War
Should I Stay Or Should I Go
I Fought The Law

The Clash released their fifth album Combat Rock prior to the US tour. The album contained the single ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go’, which received heavy airplay in the US. The following single, ‘Rock the Casbah’ was a Top 40 hit in the US, with heavy rotation on MTV. Original Clash drummer Terry Chimes, who appeared on the band’s eponymously-titled debut album, plays on LIVE AT SHEA STADIUM.

Shea Stadium, home of the New York Mets baseball team since its unveiling in 1964, has hosted some truly legendary shows. The Beatles were the first band to perform at the venue in 1965 and the success of that concert proved for the first time that stadiums could hold shows on such a large scale. Other acts that have appeared at Shea over the years include the Rolling Stones, The Police, Bruce Springsteen and Simon & Garfunkel. Sadly, the stadium has reached the end of its life and will be demolished around the time this Clash set is released.
LIVE AT SHEA STADIUM will initially be available as a deluxe limited edition digipak, followed by a standard jewelcase CD.

A major new autobiography, entitled The Clash by The Clash will be published in the US by Grand Central on November 4th. Officially authorised by the band, the book has been compiled from extensive interviews done with Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Topper Headon originally recorded for the documentary “Westway to The World.”

THE CLASH REMEMBER SHEA STADIUM:

Joe Strummer : We played Shea Stadium with The Who and it was fun to play “Career Opportunities” in a place like that, when six years earlier we’d written it in Camden Town.

Paul Simonon: During the Shea Stadium gig and other dates of that tour, Pete Townshend would come into our dressing room and we’d have a game of football. At Shea he said come back to our dressing room, so we did and there was Daltrey and all these miserable gits sitting around who wouldn’t talk to us. So Pete came back to our dressing room with us.

Mick: Playing Shea Stadium was great. Even though we were the support act, it was still exciting, and we always prided ourselves on being able to play anywhere, from the smallest to the largest place. We shot the video there (for “Should I Stay or Should I Go”).
