Re: Science Fair Project

I'd be interested in the results of this. My current location of employment has Peet's coffee brewed on location throughout the day, and from my experience, the coffee brewed on location at work is just as good as a cup brewed from a store.
I can't replicate the goodness at home, but I'm amazed it comes close at work.

ice cream shop

yeah my buddy who likes to get the coffee milkshakes goes to starbuck's while I goto Peet's for coffee.

However one caveat: I remember 10 years ago (?) when you could buy Starbuck's Coffee Icecream, in boxes to take home. IT HAD NO FLAVOR AT ALL -- I guess it really was just like Starbuck's Coffee.

Number Two

The Peet's in Menlo Park was the second Peet's ever, after the original in Berkeley. I still have the best conversations with the morning crowd of "irregulars" there. I was there almost every morning for a few years beginning 1995.

Peet's in Willow Glen, San Jose, also has lots of regulars, and I enjoy going there. It's two miles from where I live now. Willow Glen is a righteous little business district. It's mostly non-chain stores still. I feel a little guilt about attending the Peets Chain there, but the other coffees don't come close.

Unfortunately, the closest one on my path to work is in Santana Row, and nothing there really moves me. It's one of those fake-street anti-communities with almost nothing but very expensive restaurants. The Peets folks are OK there, and I see regulars, but the environment is so plastic, that nothing happens. Bleh.

Re: Peet's over Starbucks any day.

For real coffee, Peet's is by far the way to go. However, (and I say this tongue in cheek since I founded this meem), when it comes to sweet drinks, Starbuck's has Peet's beat. I used to say to customers who asked whether Peet's is better, "Peet's is a coffee shop, they sell coffee. Starbuck's though, is a great ice cream shop, and they sell tasty treats."
And I do actually like Starbuck's frappacinno better than Peet's freddo, when I'm in the mood for ice cream. But you just can't beat the thickness of Peet's French roast pressed in a french press pot. Mmmmm, I can taste the silt now.. :)

It's probably best if you don't go for coffee at Caffe del Doge in Palo Alto, their chocolate bars cost $10 each. The authentic Italian cafe (first chain opened in the US) has a pretentious European atmosphere so there will be added social pressure to buy...
