Mural Art Program Part of A Multi-tiered International Cultural Exchange

(New York, NY) - On Friday, February 16, 2007, from 9am - 4pm, seven Brazilian artists will paint 5 walls at Holcome L. Rucker school in the Bronx as part of a cross-cultural community art project. The artists are visiting New York for their debut landmark exhibition Ruas de São Paulo: A Survey of Brazilian Street Art, on view at Jonathan LeVine Gallery February 17 through March 17, 2007. An opening reception will be held at Jonathan LeVine on February 17, from 6-9pm.

Students who are involved in the Mural Art Project will learn about Brazilian art and culture, participate in painting the murals, and write their own narratives about their experience. Students will continue the project in the spring-time, painting their own murals at an adjacent school. Kids selected for the Mural Art Project demonstrated a strong passion in graffiti and the arts.

This project is a means for the kids to be validated and recognized for their talents, and be given an opportunity to contribute to the community. Kids also wrote about how they spend their free time in NYC, and then read the first-person narratives about life as a Brazilian artist. The collaboration between the Ruas artists and the school was orchestrated by Learned Evolution, a Brooklyn-based Events and Marketing company.

Although the school location is temporary and will be moving later on in the year, Evelyn Polesny comments "These murals are truly a gift to the community - the students have learned the value of leaving something for others to enjoy...sharing art." Holcome L Rucker celebrates community and encourages students to care for their community through creative partnerships, programs, and initiatives, including Institute for Student Achievement (ISA), Learning for Life, Bronx Arts Ensemble, and Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club. Most students are below the poverty line and a large portion (probably half) of the kids are in foster care. Enrollment is currently 105 students. The school is for first year to 9th grade only with a focus on preparing students for high school and college.

NEW YORK, NY — On February 15, 2007, Jonathan LeVine Gallery, in association with Choque Cultural gallery, hosts Ruas de São Paulo: LAUNCH PARTY at HIRO BALLROOM to celebrate the arrival of Brazilian artists in the United States and the upcoming landmark exhibition, Ruas de São Paulo: A Survey of Brazilian Street Art. The exhibition opening reception will be on Saturday, February 17, from 6pm - 9pm, and on view through Saturday, March 17, 2007.

Boleto, Fefê, Highraff, Kboco, Onesto, Titi Freak, and Zezão will all be at Hiro Ballroom to kick-off the event. The launch party will feature live painting by Brazilian artists, music by DJ Greg Caz of Brazilian Beat Brooklyn (www.brazilianbeatbrooklyn.com), C-TRL Labs live video-art mix (www.c-trl.com). Free Brazilian cocktails will be provided between 8pm and 9pm, courtesy of Beleza Pura and Sambazon. The Online Auction will close at 4pm on Wednesday January 31st. The highest online bid will be the starting bid during the fundraiser event at The Newspace in NYC. The silent auction will last from 7-10pm when all bids will be collected. The highest bidder for each item will be the winner and will be contacted on Thursday February 1st.
