On the heels of 3rd Ward's last successful SOLO Show we are proud to be joining Pernod to announce another open call for work to be featured this Spring.

This SOLO SHOW is open to artists working in sculpture, photography, painting, printmaking, motion graphics, illustration, installation, industrial design, graphic design, and/or film & video. If your work falls outside these categories, drop us a line - we're pretty flexible. And if it falls between them, even better...

The Selected Artist will receive a $1000 cash grant provided by the kind folks at Pernod plus a 2-month residency at 3rd Ward with FULL access to studios and facilities along with an exhibition at 3rd Ward in March with a huge opening reception and city-wide press exposure.

The Judging panel for this show will include Eric Singer, Director of LEMUR (www.lemurbots.org), Jason Goodman, founder of 3rd Ward and others, TBD.

To submit:

1) Email us a link to your website at solo_show@3rdward.com with a resume, photos, videos or otherwise-recorded documentation of your work. If you don't have a site please set up a Flickr account or YouTube channel to provide us with images. Make sure you also include your paypal account information if it is different from the email you are using to submit your work, or if someone else is paying your submission fee.

2) Use Paypal to pay the $25.00 Submission Fee by clicking here

As we continue to strive to give artists and creative professionals the resources they need at a fraction of the cost, we are adding more benefits to our already loaded membership plans to encourage people to “Create in ‘08”.

Stoking creative fires across the fields of fabrication, digital media, graphic design, photography and more, the new features to the I Heart Brooklyn, Annual and Trial memberships provide free classes and studio time along with some big savings to anyone signing up for membership starting January 1st.

New Trial members (3-month term at $60 per month) will receive a complimentary 4-hour block of time in the photo studio or day pass in the wood and metal shop while new Annual members (12-month term at $30 per month) receive one month of free membership and the same a choice of a complimentary 4-hour block in the photo studio or day pass in the shop.

Handmade Holiday Craft Fair and Open House December 8th

On Saturday December 8th, 3rd Ward is proud to present the 1st-ever Handmade Holiday Craft Fair and Open House where local artisans and craft mavens alike will be selling their wares in the classic marketplace style amidst an Open House filled with free tutorials and demos in vintage furniture restoration, sustainable lamp design, video animation, metal work, graphic design and more - all led by 3rd Ward Members and top artists and creative professionals.

We will be featuring special live performances, giveaways, discounts on membership, classes and studio rentals with steady beats, tasty refreshments and a fabulous photo booth on hand to keep the energy going throughout the day.

And right along with the spirit of giving we are going to be taking food and clothing donations for local shelters so please bring along some canned goods and clothing to donate to those in need. Giving is goodness...

So come out to 3rd Ward on Saturday December 8th and support your local artists and designers this holiday season and show Brooklyn the love it shows you every day.

The craft fair and open house will start at 12 noon and go until around 8pm with programs running throughout the day.

Free Form Opens November 16th

Free Form is a group exhibition that brings together three artists who share a similar utilization of spontaneity, irregular compositional layering and structure, and are concerned with attaining an equilibrium in their workâliteral and otherwiseâalbeit through an erratic creation process. Here, Jennifer Caviola, Matt King and Nick van Woert present fresh two and three-dimensional pieces, brimming with dynamism and exemplifying the free form.

Jennifer Caviola, who recently graduated from the Parsons MFA program, develops her abstract paintings simply, as she states, "by painting". Caviola does not make sketches nor does she have any preconceived idea as to what a painting will become when she applies her brush to the canvas for the first time. Her works are deemed complete only when a balance is achieved amongst the various layers, sprawling forms, and colors of the canvas.

Matt King, who is currently a professor for the undergraduate sculpture program at Virginia Commonwealth University and who has also taught at Cooper Union, constructs towering, haphazard concoctions using a combination of raw, found and artist-made materials in order to explore the importance of the irrational. As King states, âI think the work acknowledges that the narrative of continuity that we perceive as reality is a fiction and that we might learn by looking into fractures and contradictions that donât add up smoothly.â

Nick van Woert, a 2007 graduate of Parsons MFA program and winner of the 2007 International Sculpture Center Student Award, creates sculptures that, like his impression of culture, result from âthe pressure to produce, acquire and abandon consumable goods and information.â His artistic practice moves forward at a ludicrous speed, preventing logic and order to have any influence on what he creates.

The opening reception for Free Form takes place from 7-10 p.m. on Friday, November 16, 2007

Silent Auction, Not So Silent Rock Show 11.2

On Friday November 2nd we will be joining Brooklyn's premiere arts and culture magazine, Chief, to celebrate their 1-year anniversary with a blow-out evening of art, film, music and much, much more.

The SILENT AUCTION, NOT SO SILENT ROCK SHOW kicks off with an early evening screening of original films including shorts, documentaries, and experimental films by Eugene Mirman, Michal Kosakowski, Nick Chatfield-Taylor, and Ries Straver, and then rolls into array of live performances from upstart Brooklyn bands Ultra Dolphins, Rocket Surgery, The Swet Band, Le Rug, and Ninjasonik with DJs Dirty Finger, Rev. McFly & Porkchop spinning into the wee hours.

The Silent Auction itself will feature 50 works of art by Chief artists, both local and international, with individual works starting at an opening bid of $50.

Displayed in the main space throughout the night, the auction also functions as a star- studded group exhibition by renowned and accomplished visual artists including Dennis McNett, Matt Furie, Kim Schifino, Mike Houston, Sarah Small, Timothy Archibald, Erik Tidemann, Mike Force, Hope Gangloff, The Mangina, Toilet Town, Leon Reid IV, Nick Chatfield-Taylor and more.

3rd Ward's Handmade Holiday Craft Fair and Open House will be held on Saturday December 8th and we are accepting submissions from artisans and craft mavens alike who would like to sell their wares in the classic marketplace style during our day-long Open House which will be filled with free tutorials in wood and metal work, photography, video, digital design and more along with music, refreshments and all the great elements of entertainment that sets 3rd Ward apart.

There will be tables to rent on site with special discounts made available to Etsy Members and 3rd Ward Members with payment taken in advance to secure a spot. Prices are as follows

Full 6-foot table: $75 members/$100 non-members

*Half table shared: $37.50 members/$50 non-members

*3rd ward will pair shared table requests

COMMON CHINA

A selection of photographs by Kirsten C. Springer and sculptures by Liz Lessner opens Friday, October 12, 2007 at 3rd Ward

Exhibition Dates: October 12 – October 31, 2007
Exhibition Location: 3rd Ward 195 Morgan Ave. Brooklyn, NY

Common China talks about status and sex, taboo and display, advertising and commerce, and most of all fantasy and desire. Both Lessner and Springer frame this dialogue in terms of voyeurism but approach different aspects of what happens when we view images of desire. Lessner's sculptures, made out of Aqua-Resin are miniatures close to 6" high referencing collectible figurines from Victorian times, probe the limits of our culture's socially endorsed depictions of desire while Springer's photographs examine the commerce of self-display. Together these masturbatory works explore the fault lines in our culture's enthusiastic relationship to images of desire.

VERTIGOES: As one end goes up another goes round

An installation by Nathan Green and Owen Schoppe opens Friday, October 19, 2007 at 3rd Ward

Exhibition Dates: October 19 – November 19, 2007

Vertigoes, a large-scale installation by Nate Green and Owen Schoppe adapts forms from toys, games, and amusement rides to create an interactive and kinetic environment where sculpture fosters group engagement and interaction. Spanning two rooms, Vertigoes contains two interrelated sculptures – a carousel and a group of vertically over-lapped teeter-totters surrounded by 75 music boxes attached to the windows of the gallery. Through physical interaction with the sculpture’s mechanical and analog systems audience members will initiate the movement, displays of light and elements of sound, bringing forth the artists’ vision for Vertigoes. Acceptance of this invitation to engage in events occurring within the sculpture results in mesmerizing and disorienting effects.

From the artist’s statement – Magic can be made with the simplest of things – balls, blocks, jump ropes, and hula-hoops. Once animated through the imagination, such inert objects become mysterious and miraculous. They are the nucleus of our play, influencing how we interact with one another through their design.

Recording Studio Available for Rehearsal

3rd Ward's recording studio is now available for rehearsal and preproduction at a rate of $30/ hr or $25/hr if booked in a block of 8 hours or more.

Blocks of time can be booked across several sessions if needed but full payment must be made in advance to secure specific dates and times.
