Meet The Monsters!!

Vampire
A creature that lurks the night for people to drink blood from. Blood is important and it must also not show itself to sunlight which immediately kills it. To conserve its energy, a vampire rests in a secret location, usually in a coffin, where it lays asleep until the sun sets. When weakened, it can turn into a bat or a mist.

Werewolf
People who suffer from a disease called lycanthropy because werewolves during nights of full moon. Many who have this condition are unaware of their haunts; some of them being the type one least expect to turn into a vicious wolf-man. A werewolf’s main weakness is silver which could possibly kill it. Enemies are known to use weapons mixed with silver.

Zombie
A zombie is a body of a dead creature which has been given new life by magic or other means. Some are created by evil magicians called necromancers as servants while there are these who become zombies by accident, often exposed to a dreadful effect that “zombifies” them. They tend to work in large groups and feed on living flesh.

Mummy
Mummies are the bodies of dead people who are preserved so that they may be able to live again in a later time. They are stored in special places filled with their greatest possessions. When these places are disturbed a dreadful ancient curse is placed on the unlucky tomb raiders who will eventually suffer the wrath of mummies themselves.

Sasquatch
A large hairy man-like creature that lives in places all over the world where people have not yet become very established like forests, jungles, and, mountains. Some are known to be dangerous while others are friendly, and there are those who believe that they are somehow important to understanding or evolution from apes. However, no live specimens have been found.

Merfolk
These are human-like creatures that live underwater in huge sprawling civilizations across the seabed. They have a variety of forms depending on their type, and are often called by surface inhabitants as “mermaid”, “sirens”, “siokoi”, “panaturi”, or “the deep ones” among others. They often leave the surface world alone, but when provoked could become quite vengeful. Some are musically talented.

Oni
In Japan lives the Oni. Large human- shaped creatures with long wild hair and two horns. They are often seen wearing loincloths made of tiger skin, and carrying large iron clubs. The ancient Japanese have devised rituals for driving away these spirits, and carefully designing their temples, homes, and cities so that the Oni cannot enter easily, if at all.

Kappa
Kappas are green creatures that live in Japanese rivers and are known by the unique hole on top of their heads that contain their “life force”. Kappa’s attitudes vary from mischievous to evil, but some are also good. Killing kappa would mean making it bow so the “life force” in its head spills off. Some claim they really exist.

Tikbalang
A tikbalang is a creature with a horse’s head placed on a man shaped body. A tikbalang generally stay away from people, preferring to spend its nights puffing huge cigars. A tikbalang favors strength, and those who are able to ride it throughout the night will grant the rider a great favor.

Manananggal
An aberrant creature that appears as a normal human during the day but at night has the upper half of its body grow wings and separate from the lower half. It then flies Searching for victims to drink blood from. It has a long thread-like tongue that can be used to suck babies out of mothers’ bellies. Salt weakens it.

Dragon
A large snake-like creature known by many cultures around the world. In the west, dragons are wicked, winged creature that breath fire and steal huge amounts of treasure. In the East, dragons are nicer and have the ability to produce precious rain that farmers need to grow their crops. Many people fear and admire dragons for their strength and power.

Kraken
The kraken is an extremely large squid-like creature which roams the seas in search of food. Its favorite dish is ships with humans on it. Its tactics include staying still in the surface for long periods of time until it starts to look like an island until an unsuspecting ship passes by which it then subjects to its inescapable tentacles.

Cthulhu
A large horrible creature from the stars, shaped like a frog with an octopus for a head and bat wings. For Millennia it sleeps in the sunken city of R’lyehdeep in the Pacific until one day it becomes strong enough to eat all living things on Earth and destroy everything, it can make people insane just by being looked at.

Gorgon
A creature with a winged human’s body, a pair of fangs, and live snakes for hair. Its main tactic is to make its enemy stare at its eyes, turning the unlucky person into stone. But many are willing to hunt one down and take its head to a shield or its blood which can be used as position or medicine.

Minotaur
A large creature with a head of a bull and the body of a human, and are known to be quite savage. The most famous of all is the Minotaur of the Labyrinth which was defeated by the Greek hero The Seuss in order to save his people from the wicked king of Crete.

Troll
A large creature that lives in the snowy wilds of Scandinavia. They are green and naturally ugly, sporting unwieldy locks of hair and a big nose. They are known for taking away people and turning them into slaves. Trolls heal very quickly and thus hard to fight, but fire stops the healing process for a while, as well as acid.

Naga
Naga are giant snake creatures that are found in various places of South and Southeast Asia. Many legends are associated with them and both Hindus and Buddhists have stories with the Naga involved in some way. They are also known to live in many places, especially in spots with lots of water to swim around in and things to eat.

The Loch Ness Monster
A popular monster said to live in the waters of Loch Ness in Scotland. Many believe it is a living fossil from the cage of the dinosaurs, specifically a plesiosaur. Its popularity and its image had a boost after a kid took a photograph of a model monster with his dad’s camera, with journalists and a scientist believing it was real.

Golem
In Jewish lore, a golem is a creature made of clay and given life by a knowledgeable person like a rabbi(a Jewish priest). It then becomes a guard and servant of its creator, always always obedient and protective. Legends of golems become basis of frankenstein and many stories with robots in them. Theoretically, one can make golems out of anything.

Chimera
A creature that has a lion's head, a goat's body, and a snake for a tail. It can breathe fire and is said to cause storms, shipwrecks, and volcanic eruptions. These days, the word chimera can also be used to describe other monsters that are made of different animal parts such as sphinxes, anti cores, yali, and nue.

My Fellow Wingmen;

August has been a trying month for us here, both in real life and online. Yes, I was out for a week or so with the flu. Also, the foot traffic at Imeem command has trickled down a bit and that give us pause. Imeem command will stay open barring any other drastic changes they do to the site.

Ning command has been slowly growing. We invite all of you to join us there where you’ll find us thriving. The chatroom is moving 12 out of 24 hours per day. The video library is growing and the threads are nicely put together. Be sure to check us out: www.animedefenseforce.ning.com

Now without further delay the Anime Defense Force presents this month’s featured anime title: Gundam Seed Destiny!

A follow up to Mobile Suit Gundam Seed, Gundam Seed Destiny is set in the Cosmic Era timeline. In year 72 for the Cosmic Era, the Junius Treaty brought peace between the ZAFT and the Earth Alliance. By banning all use of nuclear power and military weapons, the pact was supposed to allow coexistence between the two organizations. With strict limitations placed on the size of both ZAFT and Earth Alliance forces, the world seemed to be a safer place. Unfortunately old habits never die and the animosity between the Coordinators and the Naturals rise.

Phase- 01: Angry Eyes
In October of C.E. 73, Cagalli Yula Athha, chief representative of the neutral Orb Union, arrives at the ZAFT military station Armory One. She is accompanied by her bodyguard, the former ZAFT soldier Athrun Zala, who now goes by the alias Alex Dino. Cagalli meets with Chairman Gilbert Durandal of the PLANT Supreme Council to voice her concerns about ZAFT's recent arms buildup. Their conversation is interrupted as mysterious intruders attack Armory One and capture three of ZAFT's newest Gundam mobile suits.

Phase- 02: Those Who Call For War
With Armory One under attack, Athrun commandeers a ZAFT mobile suit to get Cagalli to safety. The three captured Gundams engage Athrun's ZAKU in combat, but he is rescued by the sudden appearance of the young ZAFT pilot Shinn Asuka and his Impulse Gundam.
Outside Armory One, the enemy mothership Girty Lue joins the battle and wipes out the ZAFT defense fleet. Shinn and his comrade Rey Za Burrel attempt to pursue the stolen Gundams as they escape from Armory One. Instead they find the enemy commander waiting for them in the darkness of space.

My Fellow Wingmen;

It gives me great pleasure to announce the first one year anniversary of the Anime Defense Force (ADF). One year ago on this very day the ADF was established. What began as a pipedream is now a reality. Ironically, this celebration almost didn’t happen due to unforeseen circumstances. We had a lot of things planned for today with videos, pictures, and playlists, however all those ideas had to be scrapped as we raced to backup all of our files. Strange but somehow all our pictures somehow survived. Within a weeks time 3 months worth of planning went down the drain. Despite a few setbacks we’re still here. The ADF will continue to exist here you have my word.

Effective Immediately- 10Jul09 -The Anime Defense Force Imeem Command will continue for our members. In addition I now announce the opening of the Anime Defense Force Ning Command!

For our members who followed our great trek ADF Ning is a wonderful success. Lessons were learned here and the Anime Defense Force will continue to expand into other online communities.

The reason for the expansion project is for you our members. This no matter where you go or what a website community may do with shared media, you’ll always have a home to go to and be among friends.

June 09- Sakura Wars (Taisen)

My Fellow Wingmen;

Another month has gone by and with each month comes a new theme. This month’s theme is something truly different. Based on the video game Sakura Taisen released in 1996 for the Sega Saturn platform, it quickly became a huge hit obtaining a cult following in Asia. Unfortunately, the video game series never made it’s way to U.S. shores. That was until recently.

Announced on May 7th 2009, Nippon Ichi America was quoted as saying, “it would bring the 5th installment of the series to the United States in the Fall of 2009 under the title "Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love". This will be the first time a Sakura Wars game is released in America. The game will be available for the PlayStation 2 and Wii.”

Ladies and Gentlemen: it gives me great pleasure and much fanfare that the Anime Defense Force brings to you this month’s feature anime: Sakura Wars!

Go! Imperial Flower Assault Unit - Sakura Taisen

The Taisho Era, January 1st in a Top Secret briefing the nation’s top military brass discuss their plans for the formation of an anti-demon unit. Hailed as the Imperial Flower Combat Troop, it would be the answer to the counter the growing menace. With the development of technological advanced fighting machines known as, “Koubu Spirit Armor,” they must defend the capitol and it’s citizens. Each pilot is specially trained and selected. Their Koubu's are steam powered and armed with weapons that rival that of the military. However, in order to work a person must have an exceptional amount of spirit energy.

The Imperial Flower Combat Troop- Specifically selected for their Spirit Energy, each member of the unit undergoes rigorous simulation training. Operating in secret, they work separated from the military and local police. The team is housed in the capitol’s Grand Imperial Theater. This building doubles as their headquarters where each member is trained in the performing arts. This training is required, as it is shown to help improve control of their Spirit Energy. As in all theaters, the members too must perform in the monthly production.

The Original Team- 4 Members:

Sakura Shinguji- She is the newest member of the Imperial Combat Troop. Meek and clumsy, she is the daughter of Colonel Kazuma Shinguji, who lost his life in the last Demon War. Behind her timid exterior, Sakura is a master swordsman.

Sumire Kanzaki- From a wealthy upbringing, Sumire is the daughter of the president of Kanzaki Industries and a famous actress. Spoiled, she first comes off as rude and brash.

Maria Tachibana- An expert marksman and looked to as leader, Maria is the daughter of a Russian father and Japanese mother. A soldier, Maria is emotionless at times and later gets replaced as the group’s leader.

Iris Chateaubriand- A native of France, Iris is believed to be of noble blood. For her age she, possesses unique skill and abilities. Never lonely, she’s always accompanied by her teddy bear, Jean-Paul.

Koubu Spirit Armor:

Made by the joining of iron and lead, called Clisus, the Koubu armor is able to deflect psychic attacks. Extremely heavy, this makes the unit difficult to maneuver with out spirit energy. It is a quick sortie armor without any specialized weapon. Flexible, it is capable of using each operator’s preferred weapon of choice. Powered by both steam and Spirit Energy, the armor is an extension of each pilot’s body.

Sorairo Days - Nakagawa Shoko

In a world without sunlight, humanity hangs by a thread. Set in the future mankind has been forced to live underground. After several hundreds of years, many have forgotten what it’s like to venture to the surface. In the small subterranean village of Jeeha, we first become acquainted with Simon. Only 14 years old he is a digger by trade. Unfortunately, the occupation has leaves much to be desired. Unpopular with his peers, they want nothing to do with him.

Life as a digger you see, isn’t glamorous- always dirty and always covered in soot. Day in and day out all he does is dig. Digging is the only way the citizens of Jeeha protect themselves.

Dig deeper, escape the tremors, and expand the village.

With his drill bit, Simon isn’t alone as he and the other workers constantly tunnel through the earth. Digging deeper is the only option and if they worked really well they’d received food from the village chieftain.

One day while working, Simon stumbles across a mysterious object. With a pulsating glow, it must be something of value. On his way home and not knowing exactly what it is Simon fashions it as a pendant. By chance he runs into his older friend Kamina.

Obnoxious and thick skulled, Kamina has a unique way to look at things. Being the closest thing to a brother, Kamina’s dream in life is to venture out to the surface. Against all the rules, he devises a way to break free from the everyday trifles of subterranean life. To reach the surface is Kamina’s dream. It was said that as a child he once reached it with his father. However for some reason Kamina returned back minus his father. With the help of his gang, the Gurren Brigade his plan was bold. The plan however falls short as the village chief thwarts their attempt, landing all of them in jail.

The surface was forbidden and if they valued the lives of the villagers and themselves, they should forgo the endeavor. Living in constant fear of earthquakes, all attempts to reach the surface are banned. The idea of the entire ceiling collapsing, was a harsh reality. Being the leader of the Gurren Brigade Kamina was imprisoned, while Simon and the others were released.

Later that night, Simon pays Kamina a visit. Digging into the jail, there was something that Kamina must see. Simon spoke of coming across a huge face in the earth. With curious fanfare Kamina agrees to go. Before the two can escape they are discovered by the village chief. And just as things get ugly, the earth begins to shake bringing down parts of the ceiling. Suddenly a mechanical robot crashes down into the cavern destroying parts of the village.

Unconscious, the robot seems lifeless. Then it begins to move. Frightened, the villagers hide from the mysterious object. Kamina either our of stupidity or boldness, decides he must confront the metal creature. Incredibly, the robot is able to speak and before it is able to act, the robot is shot. Appearing from out of nowhere a beautiful girl (Yoko) armed with an oversized gun attack the creature. In the ensuring battle the girl, Kamina, and Simon flee. In their escape, Simon brings the two to the huge face he discovered earlier. Known as a Gamen, the huge face has a big similarity with the creature. But how does it work? In a glowing pulse the face begins to flicker. By sheer chance, Simon’s pendent does the same. The answer was simple enough to figure out. They must defeat the monster using the newly dubbed “Lagann.”

But how does it work? Where did the huge robotic face come from? What strange ties does it have with the monster that’s attacking them? And just who is this beautiful gun toting female?

In the war torn Crujis Republic, a child soldier fights for his life. Only 14 years of age, he is on the run. The year is 2301 A.D., and as the child fights, his future looks bleak.

“There is no God in this world,” the child repeatedly says to himself.

Out gunned, out positioned, and out classed; he jackrabbits through rubble avoiding enemy fire. Finally he gets cornered and as he stares down the executioner’s barrel, he is saved. One by one, the enemy mobile suits are eliminated. Bewildered, he glances up in the sky only to see a celestial being. Enshrouded in a clock of light, the object turns to him revealing a mobile suit of unknown power.

Six years later, the world is a different place. Fossil fuels exhausted, humanity has turn to harness the power of the sun. Constructed and controlled by the three major power blocs, three orbital elevators extend from the Earth into space.

The first bloc is the Union. The Human Reform League is the second. The third is the AEU. With the three power elevators split up among them, their governments became prosperous. Despite their good fortunes, the big three continuously play a game of zero-sum on a grand scale. Caught in the conflict, lay the other outlying counties that remain desolate. The once rich nations of the Middle East now lie in poverty. With their homelands in turmoil, the bordering governments are continuously manipulated by the big three. The world is unstable.

Enter Celestial Being, a private paramilitary organization whose mission is to eradicate war through the use of armed force. Armed with technological advanced mobile suits called, “Gundams,” they set out to change the world guided by one man’s vision, Aeolia Schenberg.

As a show of force, Celestial Being made their presence known to the Earth- through systematic intervention. By days end, Celestial Being was on the mind of each citizen. Through the media, the founder of Celestial Being, Aeolia Schenberg released an announcement.

“I have an announcement to the people of Earth. We are the Celestial Being, a private army organization that has the control over Gundams. The philosophy of our organization: we stand for the total eradication of war. We will not attack anyone for our own benefit. For the sake of eradicationg war… we will stand up for you. We will notify you of what we plan to do. Country, religion, energy, or for any reason. If there is a war, we will be there to stop it. Any nation, group or company that’s supports war will be attacked. We, Celestial Being, are here for that purpose, to eradicate war.”

In an usual turn of events, the super powers of the Earth shook. Who was Celestial Being? What’s their underlying motive? And who is this Aeolia Schenberg?

Throughout the series there will be many twists and turns that will challenge Aeolia Schenberg’s dream. A love will be found. A love will be lost. A dream will be crushed. Still, another will flourish. Many will die to ensure the future. A song will be sung that will help unite the world. Families will be torn apart and a betrayal will be discovered. In the end, love will heal a scarred heart and then perhaps, humanity will be forgiven.

Gundam Meisters:

Setsuna F. Seisei

Born Soran Ibrahim, he was found by Celestial Being and recruited as a pilot. Under the code name, Setsuna F. Seisei he pilots Gundam Exia. As a child he grew up fighting in the Crujis Republic. Due to his tragic history, he doesn’t believe in God and prefers diplomacy at the tip of a sword.

Lockon Stratos

Neil Dylandy joined Celestial Being after losing his family in a terrorist attack. Patient and easy going, he serves as the team sniper. Due to his mature nature he is well respected by the team and is seen as the leader. Lockon along with the ball shaped Haro pilot the Gundam, Dynames.

Allelujah Haptism

Unlike most people Allelujah Haptism grew up in a genetic laboratory. An orphan, he was test subject, “E-57,” and part of the Human Reform League Super Soldier Program. Due to the psychological and physical experiments Alleljuah is schizophrenic. His dark alter ego goes by the name, “Hallelujah.” Both Alleluhah and Hallelujah, together pilot Kyrios Gundam.

Tieria Erde

Tieria can be both cold and unforgiving. Very little is known about his background and his connection to Veda. The pilot of Gundam Virtue, Tieria is entrusted with it and its secret weapon.

Yubiwa - Youre Not Alone (Live) - Maaya Sakamoto

The Ides of March cometh! This month’s theme in the Anime Defense Force is Fantasy and Destruction as we feature two incredible stories. We’d like to thank you our, members for keeping the group the alive. Memberships, are steadily increasing. We couldn’t be happier. Word of mouth is our greatest referral. All recruitment efforts ceased months back, due to the volume of emails. Someone asked if we accept Brother and Sister group requests. The answer is, "Yes." If anyone with a group is interested, shoot me an email. In addition, before we take off here; be sure to check out the three videos from the songs of both titles; "Yubiwa," performed by Maaya Sakamoto and "Musou Uta (Live)," and the PV sung by Suara.

We have our own little niche in the anime club community here on Imeem and we’re more than eager to give you, the members your Sci/ fi, Mecha, Super Robot fix.

Also, we’d like to give a shout out to our very own FireFly who celebrates her birthday this month! FireFly, is the graphic and theme designer of the group and without her dedication and devotion, our group wouldn’t be where it’s at now. Squadron Leader FireFly- Bravo Zulu for a job well done! Ooh, RAH!

Now let’s get started and kick off the ballistics as the Anime Defense Force featues; The Vision of Escaflowne and Utawarerumono!

It starts off as a typical day for young Hitomi Kanzaki. Late for track practice, she’s much like every ordinary teenager that daydreams of love. Aside from a lanky physique, she has a hidden talent for reading tarot cards. Today, she arrives just in time to see her secret crush, Amano compete. Well known for his athleticism, Amano is the school star.

With an echoing shot, Amano takes off from the starting blocks. Would he win? What time would he get? Wide eyed, she doesn’t take her eyes off of him. He finishes first, in record time.

Now it’s her turn. With all eyes on her, Hitomi is determined to win. The gun fires and she clears the blocks. First one length, then two; Hitomi is in the lead. Just as she manages to pull away from the pack, she sees a vision.

A young man with a sword, dress strangely appears before her. Unable to avoid him, she runs right through him. Stunned, she falls to the ground and looses all consciousness. Asleep, Hitomi sees a series of untold events; a young prince, two giants fighting, destruction, and chaos. Suddenly she falls and is rescued by an angel.

Sensing salvation she awakens, only to find Amano at her side in the nurse’s office. Concerned for her well being, he comforts her. It isn’t before long, until she’s out. While walking home with her friend, it is revealed that Amano may be leaving the school. Faced with a tough decision, she looks into her tarot cards for advice. Separation and courage- Yes, Amano is leaving. She must tell him.

The next few days, the rumors are confirmed. Taking his last view of the track, Hitomi finds Amano. Bravely she has a humble request, she’d like him to fulfill. If she can complete the 100 meter dash in 13 seconds; she’d like him to give her, her first kiss. Amano agrees.

Before long, Hitomi finds herself on the starting blocks. Amano gives her the signal and she’s flies off. Faster and faster she goes. Then like the events of days past, the same young man appears from out of nowhere. As in before, she runs into him. This time they collide. At that instant Hitomi realizes that it’s him.

The man in her dreams of a distant land. Named Prince Van of Finalia, he searches for his dragon. Warning them that they must leave, Prince Van prepares to square off against the dragon. It’s an ominous warning and in the same way he appeared, so does the dragon.

It isn’t long until Prince and the dragon go toe to toe. Suddenly, Hitomi foresees the death of Van. Not withstanding, she warns him of the impending death blow. In the nick of time Van eludes the blow and seizes the advantage. The dragon then lies slain. Strangely, the Van reaches in the lifeless carcass and pulls out the Energist. The corpse then disappears as Van stands victorious. The victory is short lived and before Hitomi can move, both Van and she are transported to the land of Gaia to fulfill the Vision of Escaflowne.

A far away land, in an unknown place- a masked stranger is found. Unconscious, injured, and alone he was left for dead. It was by chance two sisters stumbled upon him; Eruru and Aruru. With a kind heart and against their better judgment, they help him by bringing him home. Slowly his is nursed back to health. Mysteriously, he can’t recall where he came from, his memories were gone. Adding to the intrigue, the mask is unremovable. It isn’t before long that he regains his strength. In order to fit in he is given a name, Hakuoro.

Seeking to make a difference in the village, Hakuoro makes himself useful. One by one, the solutions to problems that plague the village are solved. Everyday life gets a little bit easier and soon he gains the respect of his peers. One night the god of the forest Mutikapa, goes on a rampage killing several people. In the form of a white tiger, Mutikapa had a history of terrorizing the villagers. This time, Hakuoro ties to intervene and Mutikapa gains the upper hand. All seems lost, then from out of nowhere it starts to rain and Mutikapa retreats. Puzzled by the series of events, Hakuoro makes a brilliant deduction. Soon, a hunting party is set out from the village. Their goal? Kill the dreaded god of the forest.

With the village becoming prosperous, it isn’t too long before it gains the attention of others. Some have good intentions, others bad. In a quest for his identity, Haruoro must overcome the challenges to get the answers he seeks. In doing so, a monstrous beast will be unleashed with unlimitless power. Where did it come from?

In the end, a nation will be created and a nation will be destroyed. In a twist of fate, futuristic innovations will clash with the old, and friendships will be tested. But just what is the purpose of the mask and what secrets does it keep?

After Colony 195, during this time space is colonized. The five main colonies are governed by United Earth Sphere Alliance on Earth. This arrangement however doesn’t sit well with the colonist as their governments are soon overtaken by force. Using mobile suites, the Earth Sphere Alliance imposes it’s will on the colonies. It isn’t long until their actions cause discontent among a group of five leading scientists. Working within the Organization of the Zodiac (OZ), they were chiefly responsible for the designing of mobile suits. Their first proto type: Tallgeese. It would be the basic blueprint for all future mobile suits.

Fearing for their lives, each of the scientists retreated to their respected colonies. Going immediately to work, each of them designed a mobile suit. They foresaw a future of tyranny and felt the United Earth Sphere Alliance had to be stopped. Independently, each of them constructed a mobile suit out of Gundanium- a rare metal alloy. Their creations would later be known as “Gundams.”

Secretly, they each found a pilot and groomed them for war. Not knowing if their colleagues succeeded, each scientist launched their Gundam to Earth as planned. Dubbed, “Operation Meteor,” each Gundam would land on Earth to destroy Oz and the Alliance.

The five Gundam pilots would act autonomously without knowing about the other. Together with their Gundams, the five of them would fight in a war that would determine the survival of the colonies.

It’s good to be back! Due to unforeseen circumstances, we were unable to update the group page. (Apologies.) Now we’re back and to make up for loss time we’re giving our members an Anime Triple Take! After our New Year’s Double Shot, it only seemed logically. Who knows what we’ll have in store next month? Anime Block Party? Highly unlikely, but we wouldn’t rule it out. In this week’s update we’re featuring; Genesis of Aquarion, Voltron 3 (Go-Lion), and Reideen. It should be noted that the features we’re exhibiting are the U.S. Versions, so please hold your grunts until the end.

We have three amazing super robots/ mechas with three similar story lines. Dormant robots…. Of particular importance in Reideen (Raydeen) who’s historic connection is with both; the creator of Gundam and Voltes V. Unfortunately, we’re just spot lighting the old Reideen that aired in 1975. On another note, Voltron is historically responsible for the anime boom in the United States during the 1980’s. Censored and re edited for U.S. television, Voltron was one of three robot shows set to be released. However, due backlash from the community, only two Voltron titles were aired. First and finally, we have Genesis of Aquarion. It is said that this title was created and designed to pay homage to mech/ super robot anime. With that said the title leaves no subject unturned. Great music, combining robots, gay and lesbian characters, fan service, Shakespearian brother complex, reincarnated love, betrayal….. (I think I covered most of it.)

After the Great Catastrophe the Earth is left in shambles. With many areas destroyed, humanity is on the brink of collapse. An alien race then awakens from its deep twelve thousand year slumber. Its purpose- to harness the lifeforce that resides within humans. Known as Shadow Angels they possess wings and they feed on human lifeforce. Mankind is nothing more than food.
Humanity’s only hope: Aquarion. An ancient super robot forgotten by mankind. That was until the three component Vectors were unearthed by Gen Fudou. Of superior technology, the three Vectors are capable of transforming and combining to form Aquarion. However one essential ingredient was missing. Who would pilot the Vectors? According to legend, it is foretold that two lovers would be reincarnated and find each other to merge to form Aquarion’s ultimate form. The two lovers had yet to be found, thus the search began.

Due to the immense power and mental strain on the human body, each Vector pilot had to be selected. An agency known as Deava spearheaded the selection process as each potential candidate was tested. Most candidates came on their own, others were found and brought back against their will. Once the team was established it was put to a test.

At the same time, as candidates were still being screened. One of the teams; Silvia and Pierre managed locate to a person of interest. Homeless and resorting to thievery, Apollo seemed like an unlikely candidate. However, when a Shadow Angel attack hits close to home he refuses to become a spectator. During the fight, the new vector team members get defeated.

Apollo unconsciously joins the fray and takes over for the injured team. Against all odds he does the improbably and forms Aquarion with Silvia and Sirius. But just who is Apollo, and what connection does he hold to the key of Aquarion?

Light years away in the Far Universe lays planet Arus. Too far from the Earth, this planet resides on the outmost rim of the Galaxy Alliance. Under constant attack from King Zarkon’s forces, the planet is ravaged by war. The planet was once protected by Voltron, however the mighty robot met its demise at the hands of King Zarkon’s witch, Haggar. Unable to completely destroy Voltron she split him up into five pieces. With Voltron out of the way, the planet barely clings on as it sends out a message for help. A distance away their plea doesn’t fall on def ears. The Galaxy Alliance acts by sending a special force of 5 space explores. Together they must unravel the mystery and bring back Voltron.

From out of nowhere a wicked empire awakens from its hibernation of over 12 millennia. The Demon Empire races to take over the planet. Shortly after Reideen (Raydeen) awakens to within its golden pyramid. At the same time Akira Hibiki is called by a mysterious voice. Lead to the pyramid where Reideen awaits, Akira learns the truth about his origin and the Demon Empire. He must pilot Reideen, the legendary protector of the lost continent of Mu to save the Earth.

In our wrap up of 2008 you all saw the power of anime. Yes, anime can motivate one nation's military. Then as you all found out, it can help shape a nation politically. (41% of you believe that) Due to a busy schedule last week, we're giving you a Featured Double Shot of anime as we feature not one, but two anime titles this week! Both titles are very different, in fact they have nothing in common. This weeks titles are Jyu-Oh Sei and Mazinger Z! The latter needing no introduction, of course. Mazinger Z the grand father of all mecha anime and Jyu-Oh Sei an anime "loosely" related to the manga. Have fun, sleep, eat, and be safe everyone.

An abandoned penal colony, Chimera is ruled by 4 groups known as “Rings.” They are known as the; Ochre Ring, Sun Ring, Blanc Ring and Night Ring. The leaders in each hierarchy are called, the “Top.” (Second, “Second” and so on) As in Klingon Law, (for all you Trekkies) the Top position may be challenged, and the winner of each “Try” will be the new ruler.

The only way off the planet is said to be through the Dagger Pagoda. According to legend, the only one capable to gain access to the pagoda is the Beast King, or Jyu-Oh and the only way to obtain the title of the Beast King is by uniting the 4 major factions.

Somewhere on Mount Fuji brilliant scientist Professor Juzou Kabuto discovers a new metal. Unknown at the time, the metal would soon be call, “Japanium.”

At the same time and unknown to Professor Kabuto a fellow colleague in the science community is doing his own unauthorized research. While researching the legends of Mediterranean metal giants, the scientist went mad and thirsted with megalomania. Soon the wrath of his robotic beast was unleashed on the world and the world trembled with fear from the name, Doctor Hell.
Barely escaping an assassination attempt on his life, Professor Kabuto went to toil in his laboratory in Japan. He needed an answer, a response to the new menace that threatened the world. He had an idea, but one question remained. How would he power his creation? Luckily for him, a dear friend of his discovered a new energy source. His friend, Professor Yumi dubbed his discovery, “Photonic Energy.”

With the help of Professor Yumi’s discovery, Professor Kabuto named his creation, “Mazinger Z.” Professor Kabuto’s celebration was short lived, however as he was assassinated by Doctor Hell’s hit squad. Fortunately the good professor Kabuto, was able to foretell is demise and sent word of his creation to his grandson Kouji.

Upon learning of both; the machine and the nature of his grandfather’s death, Kouji Kabuto, swore an oath to defend the Earth in his grandfather’s stead.

Our next Featured title is no stranger in the super robot world. Tall tales of his influence are legendary in today’s world. Uniting a county and slashing down a tyrannical government don’t always describe an anime. But many people credit his example of unity as a shining symbol of strength. From 5 they form one, when all seems lost, he was Earth’s only hope. Ladies and gentlemen the Anime Defense Force presents to you: Voltes V!

Airing in Japan in 1976, as Chōdenji Machine Voltes V (超電磁マシーンボルテスＶ Chōdenji Mashīn Borutesu Faibu?, literal translation; "Super Electromagnetic Machine Voltes Five") he received a warm reception. It wasn’t until the title was exported to the Philippines did it received historic status. A product of the Toei Company, Voltes V was the second in a trilogy of robot titles, dubbed Robot Romance Trilogy. The other two were Combattler V and Daimos.

In the series, the Earth is under attack by alien forces. Its defense’s are annihilated by the onslaught. As a last resort the Voltes V team is summoned. Trained in secret, each one is a skill fighter. Their mission; to pilot the five Volt Machines, form Voltes V, and thwart the alien invasion. Later in the series the mission changed as the Volt Team provided hope to the Boazanians and liberated their planet.
Like many of its super robot predecessors the similar themes of; teamwork, unity, and courage would be displayed. However, unlike its predecessors Voltes V had a serious Revolutionary tone. Equality, death, and the cruel reality of tyranny came into focus as well.
During its run in the Philippines, Voltes V was the “must watch” show. Voltes V each morning discussion would be about last nights show. Everywhere, everyone was talking about Voltes V. The people were talking. Then sometime in the 1980’s Voltes V was banned by the country’s ruling dictator. The ban wasn’t just on Voltes V, but all anime. Due to its embedded political themes, the debate continues to this day as why anime was banned in the Philippines.

There are several arguments as to why the banning of anime in the Philippines occurred. One argument was the Boazanian ruler had several similarities to then Philippine President Marcos. The second was the government owned television stations were loosing money to the rival independent station that aired Voltes V. Third was anime was too violent and harmful for children to watch. Finally, another theory was that the Marcos hated everything from Japan. (It should be noted however, that his administration shared a health relationship with Japan.) In the end, history is written by the victor. Whether you believe in the romantic notion that an anime cartoon helped bring down a dictator and inspired democracy in the Philippines is entirely up to you. The one thing that is certain is, Voltes V placed as a historic footnote in Philippine history.

Ippei Mine is a rodeo champion. He was orphaned while still a young boy. His mother died trying to save him from a pack of wolves. After his mother's death, he grew bitter, aloof, but cool under crisis. He learned how to live in the streets and perform odd jobs. This kind of life strengthened his personality. Upon joining the rodeo, he learned to ride horses and how to use a whip. He found his greatest friend in a white stallion known as Aiful (a.k.a. Alpha in the Philippine English dubbed version). The two, man and beast, became inseparable. He won two rodeo championship contests with Aiful as his horse. Then one day, The Earth International Defense Force asked Ippeo to join the team. When he refused, he was taken forcibly, so for the first time, Ippei and Aiful where separated. Dr. Hamaguchi has Aiful brought to Big Falcon early in the series. Daijirō Gō is the defense tactician. He was once a playful child but Daijirō's outlook in life suddenly changed when his father disappeared. Alarmed by this change in his personality, Mrs. Gō sent him to live in the country where a martial arts master taught him different martial arts methods and forms of meditation. Upon rejoining his brothers, Daijirō was already a master of different hand-to-hand fighting styles. The naginata (fighting staff) became his favorite weapon. Together with Ken'ichi and Hiyoshi, Daijirō started training as a member of the Voltes Team.

Through her mother's guidance, Megumi became a person with a calm yet alert disposition. Joining the Voltes Team, she was the voice-of-reason among the male Voltes Team members, especially whenever Ken'ichi and Ippei were about to clash during personal conflicts. The development of the Super Electromagnetic Machine provided planet earth a defense system loaded with varied arsenals of lasers, rays, beams, missiles and other deadly projectiles.

These are as follows:
• Gatling missiles (Finger Missiles): These are powerful barrage missiles launched from the hands of Voltes V. These could blast a beast fighter robot.
• Chōdenji Beam (Super Electromagnetic Beam): A purple beam that shoots out from the yellow beam button of Voltes V’s chest. This could burn a beast fighter’s electronic innards.
• Chodenji Wave (Super Electromagnetic Wave) : A yellow ray that has oblong-like shapes, a ray that delivers a high dose of pure Super Electromagnetic energy against any Beast Fighter. It shoots out very similarly from the yellow button from Voltes V's chest, just like the Chodenji Beam.
• Chain knuckles : These are giant, ninjitsu-like projectiles that consists of massive chains, fitted with rocket-like drills at each end. These are launched from Voltes V’s hands and can bore holes into a beast fighter’s body. Voltes V can drag away the enemy with this weapon.
• Grand fire (Ground fire): A powerful beam of pyro-energy that spews out of Voltes V’s belt buckle. It could burn a beast fighter.
• Voltes bazooka: This is Voltes V’s revolver. Voltes V's right hand could be bent and transformed into a gigantic revolver-like cannon. Voltes V uses this to shoot down a beast fighter robot.
• Chōdenji goma (Super Electromagnetic Tops): These are giant steel tops that could be fitted with highly sharp steel blades. They are launched from Voltes V’s torso. The tops can even carry explosives that could blow up a beast fighter warrior robot.
• Chōdenji strings (Super Electromagnetic Whips): These are extremely sharp, high-tension steel blades that could cut through a beast fighter robot like samurai swords. These weapons are composed of Voltes V’s belt, and could be used in conjunction with the ultra electro-magnetic tops.
• Grand missile (Voltes Missile): A powerful nuclear missile launched from Voltes V’s belt buckle. This could blast a beast fighter.
• Chōdenji Ball (Super Electromagnetic Ball): A powerful ball of electro-magnetic energy. It could be created after Voltes V has harnessed energy from lightning. It is launched from his sword. This lethal energy ball could imprison a beast fighter, weakening their armors. For a few episodes it drained all of Voltes V's power when used.
• Tenkūken (the lightning sword, Also known as Laser Sword): It is deployed from the large, V-shaped breast plate of Voltes V. This extremely sharp and tensile alloy sword is re-charged by lightning before Voltes V can use it to cut a beast fighter in a V-shape manner.

Last week most of you listened to the epic anime song, “Uchuu Senkan Yamato.” The song is one of the most recognizable themes in anime. It symbolizes hope and the struggle for humanity. Everything short of a national anthem, the Japanese Self Defense Force has been known to play it frequently. Childhood memories, motivational driver, honor, and pride, it’s hard to phantom an anime song meaning so much. We hope you enjoyed last week’s Featured anime.

Our next batter up is hardly a stranger to most of you. With a dazzling soundtrack, complex themes, and fast moving animation it’s been awarded numerous accolades at the Tokyo International Anime Fair including; Best Television Series, Best Screenplay, and Best Character Design. Sakura - Nirgilis

Meet 14 year old Renton Thurston, he’s a typical teenager for his time. An avid lifter, Renton spends his days flipping through Lifting magazines. He hopes to one day meet his idol Holland, a legendary lifter. Bored with life and nothing to do, he daydreams about joining Gekkostate. Lead by Holland, Gekkostate is a group of outlaws, living the glamorous life he yearns for. With his father deceased, life with his grandfather might as well move at a snail’s pace. They live in a quite little town. His late father however, was anything but normal. A famed military scientist, his father died saving the world.

Everything’s just okay, until one day his world gets shaken up by an announced guest. In typical anime fashion his prayers are answered as Eureka and her mecha, the Nirvash type Zero crash into his home. A member of Gekkostate, Eureka request’s Renton’s grandfather for a tune up on her machine. But her arrival brings the attention of military and Eureka must fight. In the ensuing battle her pursuers are defeated and Renton’s grandfather presents him with a mission; to deliver the “Amita Drive” interface to Nirvash. From here, Renton’s life will be anything but ordinary as he discovers love and learns the complex themes of Reality.

My Fellow Wingmen;

On the behalf of the Anime Defense Force staff, I welcome you. This month you’re in for something different as we join in on the holiday festivities with our own little signature. Rather than focus one anime title for the duration of the month, we’re doing several. Each week a different anime will be in the spotlight. We’ll be presenting to you anime of the Past and the Present. We cordially invite you to come and celebrate anime; it’s history, its art, and music with us!

Our main goal is share our passion with something that we cherish dearly- Anime. You’d be surprised to learn that anime can give a nation its identity. It can be inspiring, then depressing. It can motivate an army and even be a source of pride. You’ll find out how it helped over throw a government and rebuild a nation. In the end, we hope our special redefines your answer to the eternal question, “What is Anime?”

Star Blazers, 宇宙戦艦ヤマト, Uchū Senkan Yamato 1st Op - ?

Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato) 1974-1980

Ask anyone who grew up in the United States during the late 1970’s and the chances are they’ve heard of Star Blazers. Its haunting operatic theme; the destructive sound and power of the Wave Motion Gun are not likely to be forgotten. The animation for its time was top notched. It’s subject matter, mature.

Earth was under attack by a hostile alien race, the Gamilions. Its population retreated underground after constantly being bombarded by radioactive dirty bombs. Out classed by the alien forces, the end of humanity was at hand. Suddenly a message from space is received. Within the message, the blue prints for a light speed engine were revealed along with a chart to a planet called, Iscandar. The probe sent by the planet’s queen, Starsha brought hope to the citizens of Earth. On Iscandar lies a machine that would cleanse the planet. The Earth and its citizens have just one year to live. And so began the countdown at the end of each episode; “only XXX days left, hurry Star Force…”
