dead prez, Torae and Marco Polo, Uncle Ralph added to Brookyn Hip-Hop Festival 2009

dead prez, Torae and Marco Polo, Ralph McDaniels, COTN, and Brown Bag All Stars announced
it's bigger than hip-hop

Brooklyn, NY, May 12th, 2009
For Immediate Release
The lineup for the 5th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival is falling into place. With less than six weeks out BHF '09 is shaping up to be the Hip-Hop event of the year. Just added today - dead prez, Torae and Marco Polo and host Uncle Ralph McDaniels.

----------------------------
dead prez

Hip-Hop's freedom fighters dead prez have carried the mantle for social change and intellectual revolution for over 10 years. Steadfast in their commitment these social activists/artists are the true conscious of Hip-Hop. Stic Man and M-1 first burst on the scene as protégés of Brand Nubian's Lord Jamar. Jamar discovered them in New York and helped them sign a deal with Loud Records. But being the new kids on the block of a powerhouse label like Loud (home to the Wu-Tang Clan and Mobb Deep) wasn't easy. dead prez wasn't always Loud's priority but that didn't stop them from building a fan base around their over-the-top performances. They released the critically acclaimed "Let's Get Free" in 2000 which spawned the anthem "Hip-Hop." Other releases included 2003's "Turn Off The Radio", 2006's "Can't Sell Dope Forever" and several solo projects. On June 23rd they are releasing their new project with DJ Green Lantern entitled "Pulse Of The People."

----------------

Uncle Ralph

Returning to host for the fourth time is Uncle Ralph McDaniels. As host of the uber significant "Video Music Box" and founder of OnFumes.com Ralph is in may ways the heart, soul and inspiration for The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. Video Music Box was one of the first TV programs ever to feature hip-hop videos primarily. Created in 1983 it was one of the most influential shows to give urban artists mainstream exposure. Many artists from Nas to Wu Tang to Biggie to 50 Cent to LL Cool J made their debuts on Video Music Box. Although ostensibly a local New York show, Video Music Box has been a major factor in the growth of Hip hop music and culture. Ralph's latest venture OnFumes.com takes that same pioneering spirit to the purely digital medium.

----------------

Marco Polo and Torae

When it comes to beats and rhymes, Canadian producer Marco Polo and Brooklyn MC Torae don't play, just check the résumé. On his 2007 critically acclaimed album Port Authority, Polo recruited a who's who of MC's like Kool G Rap and Kardinal Offishall to ride over his hard-hitting, boom-bap instrumentals. Torae, on the other hand, has certified his rep as one of the game's illest lyricists in a similar fashion with remarkable wordplay on his highly touted 2008 street album Daily Conversation. So, in the spirit of great hip-hop duos, the producer and the MC signed with Duck Down Records (home of Buckshot, 9th Wonder, KRS-ONE, Sean Price, Smif N Wessun, and Kidz in the Hall) in 2009 to release their collaborative album Double Barrel.

Torae had this to add, "It's an honor to be included in this years BHF. I've been attending since day one as a fan & now to be part of the line up is amazing. People know I rep Brooklyn to the fullest, so to rock is what's up. Big shouts to [Festival Executive Director] Wes [Jackson], the Brooklyn Bodega, Duck Down Records & everyone involved in making it happen."

----------------

Also joining the festivities are March and April Show and Prove winners, Children Of The Night and Brown Bag All Stars. As finalists in the Show and Prove competition they have secured their spot on at least the second stage. They may still win the opening spot on the Main Stage. That will be determined after the May 'Show and Prove' on May 21st, at Public Assembly. 8thW1, Sleepwalkas, THOSE CHOSEN and Brokn English will be competing. Once the third finalist is selected, a winner will be chosen by Brooklyn Bodega. The remaining two finalists will play the second stage. For more info click here

--------------

dead prez, Torae and Marco Polo, and Uncle Ralph join Pharoahe Monch, DJ Premier, Styles P, Smif N Wessun, and J Period on the lineup.

The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival 2009 will take place on June 18th, 19th and 20th. Events include a retrospective photo exhibit of the first four years, a kick off party, Family Day, The Main Day, and the Official After Party.

Later this week Brooklyn Bodega will be announcing a second round of Second Stage performers.

Check www.brooklynbodega.com for more info.

Tickets for the Main Day are available for only $10 at brooklynbodega.com and Fat Beats New York, 406 Avenue of the Americas # 1, New York, NY 10011, and (212) 673-3883.

----------------

Tickets for the 5th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival are available

DJ Premier added to Brookyn Hip-Hop Festival 2009

DJ Premier returns for BHF '09
reputation is the cornerstone of power

Brooklyn, NY, May 7th, 2009
For Immediate Release
The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival announced today the addition of the legendary DJ Premier to the 2009 lineup.

This is DJ Premier's second appearance at the BHF. In 2008 he headlined along with KRS ONE and Buckshot. One of the few regrets from 2008 was Premier's shortened set. This will not be a problem in 2009 as Brooklyn Bodega, creators and producers of the Festival, jumped at the opportunity to bring back one of the greatest producers and DJ's in Hip-Hop history

------

Equally lauded as one half of Gangstarr with longtime partner Guru and as producer in his own right, Premier is a pillar of Hip-Hop culture. He has crafted classics for Notorious B.I.G. ("Unbelievable", "Kick In The Door"), Jay Z ("Friend or Foe", "So Ghetto"), Nas ("Nas Is Like", "New York State of Mind") and host of others including The Black Eyed Peas, Snoop Dogg, Christina Aguilera, Ludacris and 50 Cent. However, what has made Premier so unique is that while he has remained the go to guy for the best in the game, he has always remained true to his underground roots. MOP, Big L, Mos Def, J-Live, Common, Dilated Peoples as well as developing acts Torae, NYG'z, and Blaq Poet have all also worked with DJ Premier.

"DJ Premier is simply one of the greatest. Not only musically but professionally. Who else, producer, mc, or executive, has remained not only intensely relevant but truly dominant for this long. Let us not forget [Gangstarr's] 'No More Mr. Nice Guy' dropped 20 years ago. Today he is still making hits for everyone from Maroon 5 to Termanology. After what Premier did for Notorious B.I.G. on 'Ready To Die' he became the anchor for Hip-Hop. You made your pop track for radio but you had to have your Premo track for true Hip-Hop heads," writes Festival Executive Director Wes Jackson. "I have always admired that while Premo was working with these huge acts and making good money he never let fame, success, or finances stop him from working with who he wanted. He has always stayed true to the art. He answered calls and delivered hits for MOP and Royce [the 5'9'] just as quickly as he did for Nas and Jermaine Dupri. I want to thank Premier and his manager Phat Gary for helping us make our 5th Anniversary something for the record books."

-------

DJ Premier joins Pharoahe Monch, Styles P, Smif N Wessun, and J Period on the lineup. Next week Brooklyn Bodega will be announcing several more Main Stage performers as well as the first round of Second Stage performers.

The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival 2009 will take place on June 18th, 19th and 20th. Events include a retrospective photo exhibit of the first four years, a kick off party, Family Day, The Main Day, and the Official After Party.

Family Day and Main Day are June 20th at Empire Fulton Ferry State Park, 1 Main Street, in DUMBO Brooklyn from 12p.m. - 8 p.m.

--------------

The official After Party will take place at Southpaw 125 Fifth Ave. in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Lineup TBA.

Venues for the photo exhibit and kickoff party will be announced shortly.

Check www.brooklynbodega.com for more info.

Tickets for the Main Day are available for only $10 at brooklynbodega.com and Fat Beats New York, 406 Avenue of the Americas # 1, New York, NY 10011, and (212) 673-3883.

Patrons buying online will be able to participate in the Subscriber Partnership Program, which will entitle them to premiums from our various sponsors. Details to follow.

----------

Brooklyn Bodega are the creators and producers of the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. They are a collective of cultural programmers, marketing professionals, writers, designers and academics dedicated to the celebration and preservation of Hip-Hop culture. Their daily musings can be found at www.brooklynbodega.com.

Tickets for the 5th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival are available : http://www.brooklynbodega.com/bhf09/ticketsdonors/

I hope that all of you who have donated in the past will do so again. Due to rising costs and reduced sponsorship we need your help more than ever. If you are able, we are asking you to give 20% more than you did last year. If not please give at the same level as before. If times are tough as they are for many do what you can. Bring a friend. Volunteer. Spread the word. Do whatever you can to help us make 2009 the best year yet.

For those interested in making general donations to help the cause please click here. Please make sure to add "General Donation" in your comments.

May "Show and Prove" Semifinalists - THOSE CHOSEN

Family,

We promised to you that each week we'll feature 1 semifinalists. Consider this a preview or a getting to know them better session. In addition, you'll understand why these individuals were chosen. This week's feature is : THOSE CHOSEN

We reached all the way out to La La Land to scoop up THOSE CHOSEN.
No co-sign, just some hot beats and rhymes that we found in the inbox.
Turns out they have a track record that we were not up on.

They got the email to rock at Show and Prove and booked the flight immidiately.
That’s what’s up, as the kids (in Philly) say.

——–
THOSE CHOSEN consists of Japetto, Kornbread, and Foreshadow. Out of their common love of music, the trio formed a musical brotherhood that has lead them on a journey to become a premiere hip-hop group within the ever-changing music scene.

TC has worked with some of the brightest and best producers in hip-hop such as the Grammy-winning super-producer, IZ Avila of the Avila Brothers. They have also collaborated with new-wave/funk artist, Miss Jack (of J*Davey) to produce a record titled, “The Unseen World”.

The group has shared the stage with hip-hop legends such as Slick Rick and rising stars like Little Brother and Black Milk. They have been a constant staple in California’s hip-hop scene and have gained a presence on the internet, which has lead to an ever growing buzz concerning their music.

The group has released, “Reign Food”, a “street album”, available for download on their myspace page and music blogs. “Reign Food” is driven by dynamic lyricism, but the record also has vivid story telling that ranges from estranged relationships (i.e. Crutch) to feel-good vibes (i.e. The Feeling) to triumphant glory mode (i.e. Own Lane , All in All). The album boasts of production from hip-hop’s brightest new producers like Los Angeles’ own THX and Dibia$e, along with Northwest beatmonster Dual Output, a protege of hitmaker Sha Money XL.

The group raises the bar for hip-hop with their lyrics, pulsating beats and phenomenal live performances. Lovers of music will continue to focus on Those Chosen as the group gains more steam by the minute!

www.myspace.com/thosechosen

May "Show and Prove"
Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 9:00pm
cover : $5
Public Assembly
70 North 6th Street
Brooklyn, NY

'My Melody' and 'Children's Story' are our classics. We were the original B-Boys and B-Girls. Now we are homeowners, car owners, taxpayers, business owners, and parents. We grew up with Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder as our soundtrack. Now, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and Mary J. Blige are the songs my kids hear around the house. We are a Hip-Hop Family. What is happening to Hip-Hop now is what happened to Rock-N-Roll in the 80's. As the baby boomers aged, so did Rock N Roll culture and business. The same maturation is happening in Hip-Hop. Brooklyn Bodega, Family Day and the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival, as a whole, is about ushering this new era. Family Day is our direct appeal to this growing segment of the Hip-Hop population."

-------

Organizations interested in participating should contact John Davis at john@brooklynbodega.com and visit www.brooklynbodega.com.

--------------

The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival and Brooklyn Hip-Hop Family Day will take place June 20th, from 12 noon - 8 p.m at Empire Fulton Ferry State Park located at the corner of Plymouth and Main Street in DUMBO, Brooklyn.

Performances on the Main Stage will include Pharoahe Monch, Styles P, Smif N Wessun, a live mixtape produced by J Period, the winner of the 'Show and Prove' competition and more. This year's Festival will also, for the first time, feature a second stage for local and up and coming artists.

Brooklyn Bodega is also in the midst of organizing several lead up events including a photo exhibit documenting and celebrating the first four years of the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival, a kickoff party, and the Official After Party at Southpaw.

About F.O.K.U.S. F.O.K.U.S. is an organization with the mission of creating a diverse community using the arts as the common medium. We believe the arts enable people to rise above barriers in society and our events unite diverse audiences with various art forms. F.O.K.U.S. aims to bring together art forms, both "traditional" and "non-traditional", to support the concept that we need to expand our definition of what is considered art because art surrounds us as it is part of life.

Tickets for the 5th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival are available : http://www.brooklynbodega.com/bhf09/ticketsdonors/

6 reasons to support the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival

1. Price – Black Star at Nokia Theater - $39.50 plus fees. All Points Wes $89 and up. Rock The Bells - $80 and up. BROOKLYN HIP-HOP FESTIVAL $10 AND UP.

I’m not hating on those other events. That’s not what we do here. And arguably those other events give you what you ay for. Especially the RTB lineup, which is somewhat overwhelming. But the question is 1) who has that $100 to spend on a show these days? Not me 2) APW is not a Hip-Hop Festival. They have 5 or 6 Hip-Hop acts out of 60. Hip-Hop is an after thought. We are all Hip-Hop all the time. We do have funk and soul acts but that is still family. 3) RTB is out in Long Island, APW is in Jersey City, Black Star is rocking in the heart of Gotham. We are here, in the neighborhood, in Brooklyn.

2. In the words of Premo – The Real…Hip-Hop

We go out of our way to support progressive Hip-Hop. From New York to South Africa. Old School to New School. Summer Jam (bless their heart) books Julez, Jim Jones and Jadakiss every year. We break artists like Mickey Factz and Lupe Fiasco. Put old school legends like KRS and Kane on stage in front of 8,000. Who else puts in work for the culture on such a scale in NYC? Not for the money, for the culture.

3. Our team. We are You.

From the Executive Director to the folks at the gate our whole staff is filled with Hip-Hop junkies doing it for the love. NO ONE GETS PAID. Folks work at night, on lunch breaks, take breaks from job searches, postpone papers and class projects, take telemarketing jobs, and sacrifice family time. All for the Festival and what we represent. This year our executive staff is about 80% supporters who were in the crowd last year. Young folks building their resume. Experienced folks making career changes. And people who got laid off and want to do what they love instead of plugging into the Matrix.

4. The Ladies

40% of the people who come to the Festival are ladies.
90% of the staff is ladies.
Women are under-represented in Hip-Hop for various reasons. But for whatever reason the BHF is dominated by ladies.
The GM, Director of Marketing, Volunteer Coordinator, Grassroots Marketing Manager, Stage Manager, Sales Manager, Family Day, webmaster, graphic designer – all women.
That’s good for all of us.

5. This land is your land. This land is my land.

Your $10 goes right back into the production of the Festival. The more you donate the better the Festival gets. We have a loooong wishlist of artists both big and small that we want to bring out. We have been trying to get De La since 2005. Even at a 50% discount we can’t do it. We wanted to bring U-N-I from Cali but coming from Cali means plane tickets. Which means getting artists outside driving distance is very difficult. Sometimes folks like Blu (last year) can pull it off. Most times folks can’t. We wanted Common, Q-Tip, The Jungle Brothers, and Big Daddy Kane again. Same as many other summer events. We have to get that money in early to lock these cats down. The list goes on and on. Pac Div, Special Ed, MC Lyte, Slum Village, Little Brother, Jay Electronica…
There is still time to support though. Make that donation now.

6. Hip-Hop is for everybody – not just the wealthy

We made the commitment in 2005 to keep the price of the Festival as low as we could. That decision has its ramifications. Good and bad. The good part is we get a wide swath of Hip-Hop fans. From Farragut Projects to Fort Greene to Park Slope. A $50 ticket gets you an audience from pretty much one socio-economic demo. We are bringing Hip-Hop back to the people. The bad part is we never have the cash that we need. Again, this is why we need you.

Do Your Part And Support:
get Tickets to BHF '09 - http://www.brooklynbodega.com/bhf09/ticketsdonors/

PHAROAHE MONCHE, STYLES P, J PERIOD added to BHF '09

Monch, Styles, J Period join Smif N Wessun
live bhf mixtape, the ghost and the pharoahe

Brooklyn Bodega announced three additions to the lineup for the 5th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. Joining Smif N Wessun will be Pharoahe Monch, Styles P and J Period.

This unique lineup of Hip-Hop acts is a testament to the diversity that the Festival represents.

The intelligent and critically acclaimed Pharoahe Monch is on board for this year's event. Monch is most known for his smash single, "Simon Says" from 1999's Internal Affairs album and his classic collaboration with Mos Def and Nate Dogg "On No", however he is far from a flash in the pan rapper. He was the co-founder of the legendary duo Organized Konfusion with partner Prince Po. Monch has been pushing the envelope on lyricism and artistry for almost twenty years and there is no sign of him letting up anytime soon. With a new album, Desire, and collaborations with producers The Alchemist and Black Milk, old school to new school alike respect the Pharoahe. His unique delivery and wordplay make him one of the most popular New York rappers and we at the Brooklyn Bodega are excited to have him on board.

Styles P will be adding his no nonsense lyrical style to the 5th Annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival. As the landscape of hip-hop is changing with many eclectic artists labeled everything from emo-rap to hipster rap, there are still MCs who give you the streets, straight no chaser, no fairy tales, no lies. Styles P is one of the game's premier MCs with an unwavering and relentless delivery. Styles first stormed the scene as a member of The LOX. The trio consisting of Styles, Jadakiss and Sheek Louch were part of the original Ruff Ryders family that including DMX and Eve. The LOX released the classics, "Money, Power, Respect" and "Wild Out." After leaving Bad Boy the trio has embarked on successful solo careers. Styles P dropped his solo debut A Gangsta and A Gentlemen in 2002 and since has dropped two other solo albums and countless mixtapes. He recently released the hit single, "Blow Your Mind" with longtime producer and mentor Swizz Beats. Styles is one of the few MC's in the marketplace who can move between the mainstream and backpack/progressive space with ease and respect.

Mixtape impresario J Period has been a staple of the Festival for years. His sets have produced some of the best highlights from the Festival. Keith Murray, Parrish Smith, Jeru, Chubb Rock, Crazy Legs and more. J Period's exclusive mixtapes featuring Q-Tip and Lauryn Hill are industry standards. This year J Period and Brooklyn Bodega are taking the execution up a notch by producing a live Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival mixtape featuring performances from all the acts and guests that hit the stage. Contributors to the live mixtape will be rolled out every week between now and June 20th.

Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival Executive Director Wes Jackson, "We are more than pleased when we look at our lineup so far. Our goal has always been to unite the Hip-Hop audience under one banner. Monch, Styles and Smif N Wessun represent different branches of the Hip-Hop tree. They defy the labels stamped on them. Monch is conscious rapper who is at equal ease on the bully pulpit as he is in the club. Some know him for Organized Konfusion's 'Releasing Hypnotical Gasses.' Some know him for the anthem 'Simon Says.' Styles is supposed to be a gangster rapper but has done some of his best work with Talib Kweli. His song 'I'm Black' was one of the most provocative and conscious songs of the past 10 years. So provocative that he risked his deal with Interscope just to get it out. Smif N Wessun is a local act that are just as popular in Japan as they are in Crown Heights. And J Period is the glue that keeps us all connected. This lineup is diversity. This is Hip-Hop. Hopefully we can get Styles and Monch to do 'My Life.'"

Styles P, Pharoahe Monch and J Period will be joining Brooklyn's own Smif N Wessun who were announced last week. Dru Ha, Co-Owner of Duck Down Records
"The Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival is one of the most talked about events of the Spring. Brooklynites line up hours in advance of the show to partake in what has become a yearly tradition that provides quality entertainment for the Community. It's an honor to work with Brooklyn Bodega who strives to unite aspiring artists with renowned veterans. In the words of Smif N Wessun, "Bucktown I represent it on the love love. Deeply routed from my Timbz to my ____." If you can fill in the rest we already know you're rocking with us. 360 degrees back home, we'll see everyone June 20th at Fulton Ferry State Park."

------------

More acts including the winner of the 'Show and Prove' contest will be announced in the coming weeks.

The 5th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival takes place on June 20th, 2009 from 12-8pm at Empire Fulton Ferry State Park.

Tickets are available for a $10 suggested minimum donation.
VIP and Small Business packages are available.

There are also sponsorship and vending opportunities. For more info email john@brooklynbodega.com

Winner of April 'Show and Prove'

After a show stopping performance at last Thursday’s ‘Show and Prove’ Brooklyn Bodega, producers of The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival today announced the winner of the second installment of the competition. The winner is The Brown Bag All-Stars.

The group consisting of Audible Doctor, J57, Cold Codeine, Koncept, Soul Khan, E Holla, Element, and Goo helped pack the house at Public Assembly and thoroughly impressed the Bodega crew in attendance.

“I want to congratulate Brown Bag on a killer show last week. They hit the stage with energy and enthusiasm that was infectious. They made a lasting impression on all of us. I also want to thank Cymarshall Law and Mr. Beatz who helped us pack Public Assembly to capacity. Even they are not the winners they have our attention for sure,” Wes Jackson, Executive Director of The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival.

When asked what was it that Brown Bag did to seal the deal Jackson responded by saying, “They did a good job of translating their brand on stage. The vibe we got from their submission was this powerful group of Hip-Hop junkies ready to attack any stage. That was exactly what we felt. On a marketing level they brought out the most people. They spent time after the show speaking with our staff and gave us a better understanding of their mission. The show was well organized, concentrated and crisp. I enjoyed all the acts but at the end of the day they brought it on all levels.”

Semifinalists for the May 21st ‘Show and Prove’, the last before the Festival will be announced this week.

Brown Bag All Stars joined Children Of The Night as the first two of three finalists in the Show and Prove competition. There is still time to enter for May. Send links to audio and video content to showandprove@brooklynbodega.com.

The 5th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival is June 20th at Empire Fulton Ferry State Park.

For more info check www.brooklynbodega.com
